Steaming and Seething

A chance conversation on Facebook (someone – you know who you are! – asked how to photograph steam coming out of someone’s ears – answer “with the light behind!”) led me to dig out this photo which I actually shot several months ago, but haven’t published anywhere until now.

I had just made myself a post-lunch espresso with the sun streaming into my flat, and was so amazed by the way the sunlight caught the steam plume that I had to set up the Nikon on the tripod and run the machine again there and then while the light was right, just so that I could capture the shot!

I also think it works well cropped to just show the bubbling overflowing cup (second frame) – though a bit noisy, perhaps.
